OREANDA-NEWS. November 19, 2007. The President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, signed Decree No 565 “On Certain Measures Relating to the Construction of a Nuclear Power Plant”, reported the Presidential website http://president.gov.by.

The document aims at ensuring the fulfilment of the preparation activities for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Belarus, providing nuclear and radiation security in conformity with the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Decree provides for establishing a Directorate for the Construction of a Nuclear Power Plant under the Ministry of Energy. The newly-formed institution will function as the customer ordering the fulfilment of the preparation, planning and surveying activities related to the nuclear plant project.

The Decree provides for setting up, under the Ministry for Emergencies, a Directorate for Nuclear and Radiation Security. The document also adopts the Provisions designed to govern the work of the new institution.

The scientific support for the preparation and construction of the plant will be provided by the State Scientific Institution “the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Studies Sosny” under the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The republican unitary enterprise Belnipienergoprom has been designated as the general designer of the plant. It will handle all the issues related to design and estimate documentation, sign contracts with suppliers of engineering services, carry out the relevant feasibility studies and prepare tender-related documents.
