OREANDA-NEWS. November 30. Members of the Strike Committee of Second Stevedoring Company (part of Sea Port of St. Petersburg OJSC) have held a conference today as regards continuation or calling off of the strike. According to Maxim Galushko, head of the company’s Strike Committee, a decision was taken at the conference to call off the strike which means it will not be resumed.

According to Mr. Galushko, the administration told the management could make advances to dock workers only if they call off the strike. “We accepted it as we think bad peace is better than good war,” Mr. Galushko said. According to him, on December 3 the negotiations will be held with the port’s management as regards wages increase.

Mr. Galushko also reminded that First Stevedoring Company and Second Stevedoring Company are still under strike status.

As it was reported earlier, the strike started on November 13, at 08:00 a.m. (Moscow time) by the workers of First Stevedoring Company, Second Stevedoring Company and Forth Stevedoring Company of Morport OJSC under initiative of Russian Trade Union of Dockworkers They demanded a 20-25-percent rise in tariffs and guaranteed wages. The strike of the dockworkers of First Stevedoring Company (Sea Port of St. Petersburg) was terminated under the Court’s decision dated November 16 till December 14, 2007. After that, the Strike Committee of Second Stevedoring Company (Sea Port of St. Petersburg) decided to suspend the strike. The strikes are probably suspended by the three stevedoring companies till the dockworkers falsify the Court’s ruling. On November 26, technical workers of Sea Port of St. Petersburg followed the dock workers of First, Secons and Forth Stevedoring Companies and terminated the strike.
