OREANDA-NEWS. December 4, 2007. Four new power lines with a total capacity of 1,600 megawatt are to be constructed between Georgia and Turkey, the Ministry of Fuel and Energy of Georgia said. The parties have already signed a corresponding memorandum of understanding, the building decision was already approved by the government of Georgia. According to the agreement reached by the energy authorities of both countries, power lines are to be erected by Georgian companies in the territory of Georgian Republic and by Turkish companies in the Turkish territory. The electric power prices in Turkey are relatively high so this country is interested in importing the electric energy from Georgia where it is cheaper. The construction is to be started in 2008, the Ministry said.

Several days ago the reconstruction works on the second power unit at the Inguri hydro electric power plant (in the zone of armed conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia) was completed. The capacity of the freshly repaired unit is 260 megawatt.
