OREANDA-NEWS. December 17, 2007. Head of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Control of the Russian Federation Konstantin Pulikovsky has decreed to introduce safety guide for transportation of radioactive materials.

The guide sets requirements for transportation of radioactive materials and recommends ways to meet the requirements. The guides are the Russian analogues of the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials.

The guide has been drafted by the Nuclear Safety Institute with the support of Rosatom and Rostekhnadzor.

The key objective of the guide is to ensure the high safety of transportation of radioactive materials due primarily to safe packing.

The guide sets requirements for preparation, organization and execution of transportation of radioactive materials.

The structure of a container and the process of transportation should be certified.

The guide also specifies possible accidents during transportation and ways to prevent them as well as methods for ensuring the physical protection of nuclear materials.
