OREANDA-NEWS. December 19, 2007. “We are completing the structural reformation of our nuclear industry. I think we’ll complete this process by Mar 1 2008,” the head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko said during the conference dedicated to the 40th anniversary TsNIIATOMINFORM on Tuesday.

“We have established Atomenergoprom holding, comprising civil nuclear companies, and on Dec 14 we registered Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, representing both civil and defense sectors of our nuclear industry. On Mar 1 2008 the President of Russia will decree on transfer of powers from the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy to Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation,” Kieiyenko said.

The key objective of the first stage of the reforms was to create conditions for the development of the industry. The objective of the second stage is to realize the created conditions.

Atomenergoprom has become the fourth big player on the world nuclear market. The consolidation of all Russian nuclear companies into one holding will strengthen Russia’s positions on the world market and will enhance its prestige among the other foreign players.

China and India are also seeking to establish big nuclear corporations. So, Russia will face quite tough competition.

Kiriyenko pointed out that now that nuclear energy is experiencing global renaissance, Russia has an absolute competitive advantage: a home order for the construction of 26 nuclear power units by 2020 with guaranteed financing.
