OREANDA-NEWS. December 21, 2007. Presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan instructed their nuclear energy departments that by summer 2008 they consider the possibility of construction of NPP in Aqtau

During a press-conference in the Kremlin President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said that Russia and Kazakhstan had reached an agreement of principle on the matter.

He said that the departments were also instructed to consider ways of further integration of the nuclear industries of the two countries.

Earlier, the head of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy of Russia Sergey Kiriyenko said that Russia and Kazakhstan were discussing the possibility of building a nuclear power plant in Aqtau (Kazakhstan). He said that it would be a plant of third generation based on the technology of submarine reactors.

Kiriyenko said that Kazakhstan was Russia’s strategic partner in the nuclear sphere. Kazakhstan is the second in the world in uranium mining, while Russia is the first in uranium conversion and enrichment. “Integration will strengthen our positions on the world market,” Kiriyenko said.
