OREANDA-NEWS. December 28, 2007. National Container Company (NCC), the leading terminal operator in Russia has completed construction of quay wall for the first phase of Ust-Luga Container Terminal (ULCT). The task was accomplished on the 25-th of December 2007 which resulted in 440 m of what will become berths #3 and #4 of the future terminal.

In 2008 NCC will commence pavement of the container yard as well as construction of administrative buildings and technical facilities. The first phase of terminal development will be completed in December, 2008.

In 2008 ULCT will receive the first Panamax STS (ship-to-shore) crane produced by Konecranes. Three more cranes of the same standard will be delivered at ULCT in 2009.

Ust-Luga Container Terminal will grow the largest one in Russia and the Baltic region. As Alyona Ashurkova, President of NCC, emphasized, "accomplishment of such a major project will cover the deficit of terminal capacity in the region and allow for sustained and continual container throughput in Russia as a whole".

NCC started construction works at the site of ULCT in April, 2007. The opening stage of the first phase is due to be completed in December, 2008 and will provide for throughput capacity of 150-180,000 TEU per annum. The total capacity of the first phase will amount to 500K TEU.

By 2019 total terminal capacity will reach 3M TEU. This is the largest terminal project in the countries of the Former Soviet Union that has total investment of $800M.
