OREANDA-NEWS. December 29, 2007. The reopening of the renovated runway has marked a milestone in the history of Moscow Domodedovo International Airport. Putting the runway into operation brought the throughput of Domodedovo Airport to 60 take off and landing operations per hour – the highest figure among the Moscow aviation hub airports, the company's press service reports.

“According to both Russian and foreign experts, as of today, this runway is among the best in Europe, both in terms of surface and radio equipment, lighting and weather equipment,” said Sergey Rudakov, Director of Domodedovo Airport Complex.

“The efforts to develop the ground infrastructure of civil aviation have been spurred on by the consistent growth of the industry. Putting of a new runway into operation at Domodedovo Airport increases the overall throughput of the Moscow aviation hub, addressing the rapidly growing passenger traffic. It will also enhance the quality of service for passengers and reduce the number of delays due to weather conditions. This is achieved thanks to state-of-the-art technical equipment that allows for handling a variety of the latest aircraft types virtually in any weather conditions,” Yevgeny Bachurin, head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, convincingly argues. Runway-1 at Domodedovo will be capable of accepting all types of aircraft in most adverse weather conditions, including new Airbus A380 airplane.

As of today, Domodedovo Airport is the only one among the Moscow aviation hub airports to boast two state-of-the-art parallel runways, two kilometers apart. A similar configuration is used at the airports in Munich, Oslo and Athens. “Currently, we are implementing together with Rosaeronavigatsiya (Russian Air Navigation Agency) a project to arrange for independent operation of both runways,” explained Sergey Rudakov. In the longer-term, it will allow us to bring the airport’s throughput to 90 take off and landing operations per hour, which would place the airport into the throughput category of giants, like London Heathrow Airport.
