OREANDA-NEWS. January 29, 2007. According to the master plan for the development of the port of Ust-Luga, approved by Russia’s Federal Agency of Marine and River Transport (RosMorRechFlot) of the RF Transport Ministry, the port’s annual throughput is to grow up to 120.6 million tonnes of cargo by 2015.. According to the former master plan approved in 2004 the complex was to handle 36 million tonnes per year by 2010.

The port’s capacity increase is driven by general growth of cargo flow in the North-Western region of Russia as well as by expansion of cargo range, application of new transshipment technologies, adjustment of investors’ plans and attraction of new participants.

By 2015, commercial seaport of Ust-Luga plans to handle 13.1 million tonnes of general cargo, 2.6 million tonnes of timber, 32.5 million tonnes of dry bulk cargo, 33.5 million tonnes of containerized cargo, 36 million tonnes of oil cargo, 2.9 million tonnes of ferry cargo.

Besides, the master plan envisages the territory expansion. Nearby Krakolje village (Kingisepp district, Leningrad region) it is planned to build a residential area for 34,500 people (mainly low-rise and cottage buildings). Company Ust-Luga does not confirm the information distributed by some media as regards expulsion of people from Luzhitsy village (Kingisepp district, Leningrad region) within the framework of the project.
Commercial seaport of Ust-Luga is a multi-purpose port with a complex of commercial and related facilities. The port complex covers the terminal of 810 hectares. By 2025, it is to expand to 1,600 hectares. The project’s implementation ensures efficient cargo transshipment and solves the problem of deficiency of port handling facilities at the Russian shore of the Baltic Sea. The development of the reserve territories may contribute to the development at the north of Soikiski peninsular.
