OREANDA-NEWS. On 25 March 2008 was announced, that the UN provided first-priority international humanitarian aid intended at people, who suffered during the flood in South Kazakhstan. It is mainly the basic hygienic packages in the total value of USD 40,000. The aid was transferred to the South Kazakhstan branch of National Society of Red Crescent for further distribution among affected families in Sary-Agash, Ordabasy, Arys and Shardara regions of South Kazakhstan oblast.

Week earlier, the UN office in Kazakhstan disseminated the report on urgent needs of the residents of the area among the potential international donors to mobilize the humanitarian aid.

In addition to the first-come humanitarian aid, the UN agencies in Kazakhstan are taking necessary steps to eliminate the social consequences of the disaster. The UNICEF is working on the water supply opportuinities improvement, extending support to the children from poor families and providing solutions to the sanitary and epidemiological problems in the region. UNHCR is considering the option of providing the shelter to the suffered, whereas the UNDP is planning to allocate USD 50,000 to solve the problems of logistics, transportation and coordination in the post-crisis environment operations.
