OREANDA-NEWS. April 29, 2008. Almost half of the Russians (41%) believe that nuclear energy will be the only alternative when gas and oil come to end, say the results of the survey held by Levada Center on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl accident (Apr 1986).

The other two possible alternatives are hydro resources (18%) and coal (10%).

Only 5% of the Russians suggest stopping the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, while 72% say that nuclear power industry should be either preserved or actively developed. Each 10th suggests stopping relevant research.

As regards Chernobyl accident, 55% are indignant that the Soviet authorities tried to hush it up, did not evacuate people from the area and did not hurry to localize the consequences. 36% believe that Chernobyl accident was a big blow on the health of people and the environment.
