OREANDA-NEWS. June 6, 2008. The final round in the World Amputee Football Cup for the Stroytransgaz Prize has ended. Matches took place from May 26 through May 31 on the football fields of Sputnik-Sport in Sochi. The Sputnik complex is home to the training center for the national football teams.

This is the second year during which, on initiative from Stroytransgaz, the matches were organized in cooperation with the World Amputee Football Federation, the Federation of Football Invalids of Russia, and the Russian Football Union. Seven teams from country-members of W.A.F.F. vied for first place: Olimpro (Russia), Karaguchu (Turkey), Manchester (England), Victoria (Iran), Salang (Ukraine), Bainal-Minal (Uzbekistan), Konkerors (Liberia).

First place, for the second time, went to Russia’s Olimpro – holder of the Russian Federation President’s Cup 2004, 2006, 2007; the RFS Cup 2005, 2006, 2007; and the Russian Championship 2006 and 2007. The team’s members were awarded gold medals and the Cup.

Silver and bronze medals, for second and third places respectively, went to Uzbekistan’s Bainal-Minal and England’s Manchester. The other participants in the championship received mementos. The best players in the tournament were awarded special prizes: the Valor Cup went to Liberian team Konkerors and the Fair Play Cup went to Iranian team Victoria.

Members of the organizational committee for the championship and the supervisory council included  Minister of Sport, Tourism and Youth and President of the Russian Football Union Vitaly Mutko, Vice-President of the W.F.F.A. Ivan Kiyanskiy, President of the Federation of Football Invalids of Russia Georgiy Lunacharskiy, Chairman of the Committee for Popular Football of the Russian Federation and Chairman of the Council of Federation Committee on Safety and Defense Victor Ozerov, First Vice-President of Stroytransgaz Vyacheslav Babusenko, and General Director of the Sputnik complex Mikhail Dremov.
