OREANDA-NEWS. August 21, 2008. As of late June 2008, total volume of deposits in the banking system of Moldova amounted to 23 billion 555 million leis, increasing by 1,4% in comparison with the same period of 2007.

According to the National Bank of Moldova, the main factors for this are growing incomes of population, including growth of remittances from abroad, as well as increased confidence of the depositors to the banking system.

Deposits in leis have grown from 52.7% as of late June 2007 up to 59% at the same period of 2008. In I half of 2008, the volume of deposits in leis has increased by 1.6 times, and since the beginning of the year – by 18.7%, reaching 13 billion 904 million leis. Since the beginning of the year, the volume of at-side deposits increased by 0.2%, and term deposits-by 29.3%, accordingly.

In June 2008, the average return on term deposits in leis amounted to 18.41%, increasing by 2.7 percentage points as compared to December. As of late June, 2008, the volume of deposits in foreign currency amounted to 9 billion 651.5 million leis, increasing by 22.5% as compared with the same period of 2007, and by 7,9% since the beginning of the year.

In June 2008, the average return on deposits in foreign currency made 10.24%, increasing by 3.75 percentage points since the beginning of the year and by 4.28 percentage points as compared with June 2007.
