OREANDA-NEWS. On August 29, 2008 President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko met with the Chairman of the State Control Committee, Zenon Lomat, to receive his report, reported the Official website http://president.gov.by.

Zenon Lomat informed the President on the main results of the work of the State Control Committee over the first seven months of this year.

The President’s requirements to reduce the number of audits have been fulfilled, said Zenon Lomat. Their total number in January-July fell by 22 per cent (from 7,700 in 2005 to 6,000 in 2008).

According to the head of the Committee, the audits have become increasingly of the preventative nature. They are subsequently considered at enlarged sessions of the committee, including on-site sessions. There has been a tendency toward the reduction of the number of persons relieved of their posts, and reduction in the number of criminal cases brought to court.

The Committee has analysed the way in which some state, branch-wise and regional programmes have been implemented. The conclusion is that the implementation of the programmes has not been efficient enough; in some instances financial resources are used irrationally.

Not all of the planned initiatives to recover Lake Naroch have been realised, according to Zenon Lomat.

The President has been informed on the efficiency of the use of the Augustow Canal. The economic effect from the Br 40 billion invested in its reconstruction has been very small. No construction has been started of a restaurant, two cafes, a hotel, an amphitheatre; no issues have been solved with respect to water supply and electricity supply for this facility. No proper conditions have been created at the facility for attracting investors.

The Committee has proposed to instruct the Government to study the course of implementation of all state, branch-wise and regional programmes and submit proposals to the Head of State as to whether there is any economic sense in carrying on with those of them that are not relevant at this stage of social and economic development of the country.

The meeting also considered the Committee’s work in a range of other areas.
