OREANDA-NEWS  On 26 September Kazakhmys PLC (“Kazakhmys”) announced that it signed a USD 94 million agreement with Lodge Cottrell Limited, a subsidiary of Korea Cottrell Co., Ltd., to deliver and install electrostatic precipitators to the Ekibastuz power plant, as a first step in the modernisation programme launched by Kazakhmys since it acquired the plant in May this year. The first electric precipitator will be installed at the end of 2009 and by 2013 it is planned to have electric precipitators at six power units. These electrostatic precipitators catch 99.85% of ash in the air and it is estimated that they will reduce gas emissions by a factor of four. Kazakhmys plans to invest further in the modernisation and investment programme at the Ekibastuz power plant, which is focused on the environmentally sensitive improvement of operations and capacity expansion of the plant.
