OREANDA-NEWS. October 03, 2008. The second 100 litas commemorative coin from the series of three coins dedicated to mark the millennium anniversary of the mention of the name of Lithuania was issued today. The presentation of the new coin was arranged in the Gothic hall of Trakai Castle which has a memory of significant pages of the history of Lithuania, reported the press-centre of Bank of Lithuania.

“This is already the fifty sixth commemorative coin issued by the Bank of Lithuania. It reflects the historical and cultural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania symbolising the prosperity of the State”, the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania said.

One side of the new coin bears inscribed the State’s most important events and phenomena on a stylised contour of the map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The composition is surrounded by the inscription LIETUVOS DIDZIOJI KUNIGAIKSTYSTE (the Grand Duchy of Lithuania); at the top is a GDL duke’s coronet.

The other side of the coin features a stylised Vytis against a background of historic victories and flames of ceaseless renewal.

The very informative coin minted impeccably by the Lithuanian Mint (like the first one too) was designed by Liudas Parulskis, and his idea was implemented in plaster by Giedrius Parulskis, well known to those interested in Lithuanian commemorative coins, who has designed already a 15th coin.

The first 100 litas gold coin from the series dedicated to mark the millennium anniversary of the mention of the name of Lithuania appeared in circulation a year ago. Reinoldijus Sarkinas reminded that at the international commemorative coin competition Coin Constellation organised in Saint Petersburg this year, the coin was awarded the second d place in the category “The Unique Conceptual Solution”.

The series will be completed by the third coin in 2009. It will have to reflect Lithuania’s present.
The mintage of the coin issued today is 10,000 pieces. The coins can be obtained at the cash offices of the Bank of Lithuania in Vilnius (Totoriu g. 4), Kaunas (Maironio g. 25), and Klaipeda (Naujoji Uosto g. 16). The price of the coin is LTL 850.
