OREANDA-NEWS  On 17 October was announced, that first runway (Runway-1) of Moscow International Airport Domodedovo received a certificate, confirming it’s compliance with ICAO category III “A” standards. The certificate (№013 А - М ) was given by the Interstate Aviation Committee on September 24, 2008.

Category III “A” certified runways allow an aircraft to approach landing with vertical visibility at a 15 m. minimum and horizontal runway visibility at a 200 m. minimum. In practice this allows an airport to receive almost all aircraft types, even the latest “editions” of most contemporary liners, in almost any meteo-conditions and thus reduce flight delays due to weather conditions and increase flight regularity.

Currently, both runways at Domodedovo airport are certified to ICAO’s category III “A”. The fact that both runways at Domodedovo comply with ICAO category III “A” standards is a serious competitive edge of Moscow International Airport Domodedovo which makes it even more attractive for Russian and international carriers. Our next step will be operating both runways simultaneously and independently. This project is being worked on together with Rosaeronavigatsiya (Russian Air Navigation Agency), and it will enable us to bring throughput to a record of 90 take-off and landing operations per hour” comments Domodedovo PR Director, Eldar Tuzmukhametov.

ICAO III “A” category certification is part of a large-scale project of first landing zone reconstruction. Runway-1 is equipped with the latest electronic, lighting and meteorological equipment. It’s surface has no prototypes in Russia and the unique system of high speed taxiways allows an aircraft to leave Runway-1 after landing, at a speed of 93 km/h in wet surface conditions.
