OREANDA-NEWS. November 20, 2008. A Russian delegation led by Director General of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation Sergey Kiriyenko has arrived in India for visiting the construction site of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (a project implemented with Russia’s support) and discussing possibilities of further cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy. The delegation is being accompanied by the president and the chief managing director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India S.K.Jain.

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (Tirunelveli, state of Tamilnadu) is being built in the framework of the Soviet-Indian inter-governmental agreement signed in 1988. Initially, the parties planned to build two 1,000MW reactors but in early 2008 they initialed an agreement for construction of four more reactors and for cooperation under other projects in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The first stone of the 1st unit of Kudankulam NPP was laid on Mar 31 2002. The construction is being carried out by Atomstroyexport company. Over 100 Russian engineers and other specialists are working on the construction site for the moment.
