OREANDA-NEWS  On 11 December was announced, that Tajikistan Energy Ministry and the Turboatom turbine company (TATM), the largest turbine manufacturer in Ukraine, reached agreement on December 5 on supply of six turbines and a hydraulic lock to the Nurek hydroelectric power station (Tajikistan) during the period of 2009-2012. Oleksii Cherkaskyi, Turboatom deputy director-general for economics and finance said. According to Cherkaskyi, the agreement was reached during the visit of Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon to Ukraine. One turbine is expected to be delivered in 2009, two in 2010, two on 2011, and one in 2012. "The president of Tajikistan has instructed the Energy Ministry to sign the relevant agreement by December 31," Cherkaskyi said. According to information from Turboatom, the two sides also signed a protocol of intentions to create a joint enterprise in Tajikistan for design and production of hydraulic turbines for small- and medium-sized hydroelectric power stations. "The two sides will consider in Dushanbe in January-February 2009 the organizational and legal issues involving creation of a joint enterprise and discuss the range of equipment that will be produced at the joint enterprise," Cherkaskyi said. According to Turboatom Director-General Viktor Subotin, construction of a third hydroelectric power generator for the Rogun hydroelectric power station (Tajikistan) is also planned for the future. The Rogun hydroelectric power station is equipped with two 200-megawatt hydraulic turbines and one hydraulic lock manufactured by Turboatom. Up to 30% of equipment manufactured for the Rogun hydroelectric power station is presently at Turboatom. The power stations in Tajikistan have a combined installed capacity of 4.07 million kilowatts, out of which 3.59 million kilowatts or 88.2% is provided by 22 hydraulic turbines manufactured by Turboatom. According to information from Tajikistan Energy Ministry, the Nurek hydroelectric power station is the largest hydroelectric power station in the country and has an installed capacity of 3,000 megawatts and an average annual electricity output of 11.2 billion kilowatt-hours. President Viktor Yuschenko and Rahmon announced at a press conference on December 4 that Ukraine and Tajikistan were seeking to accelerate their cooperation in the area of hydroelectric power generation. A joint statement in which the presidents of Ukraine and Tajikistan outlined the priority areas of cooperation in the hydroelectric power industry was signed at the end of Ukrainian-Tajik talks. Rahmon arrived in Ukraine on December 3 for an official visit.
