OREANDA-NEWS. December 22, 2008. The number of domains registered in the UZ zone has reached 7,500. Since the beginning of the year, over 3,450 domains were registered and 1,700 were removed. The growth rate was 30.2%.

A source at the Communication and Information Agency of Uzbekistan (UzACI) told that at present, Uzbekistan had seven official UZ domain registrars. This is six companies in Tashkent and one in Ferghana. The registration cost is one of the lowest in the world, between USD 16 and 25.

The administrator of Uzbekistan’s Top Level Domain (ccTLD) UZ is the computer and information technology development and introduction center (UZINFOCOM) according to a sponsor agreement with ccTLD, signed with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on March 27, 2003.

As the administrator of the UZ top level domain, UZINFOCOM regulates activities of domain name registrars and carries out active work to stimulate and coordinate the process of establishing and developing information resources in the national Internet segment.

The center takes measures to decentralize domain name registration and support services, to ensure competitive conditions in the field and to increase the number and improve the quality of services offered.

The estimated number of Internet users is 2.37 mln or 83 users per 1,000 citizens in Uzbekistan. After the first half of this year the number was equal to 2.21 mln (81 per 1,000 citizens) and as of the beginning of the year - 2.01 mln (74 per 1,000 citizens). The total speed of access to the international information networks is 515 Mbits/s.
