OREANDA-NEWS. On 16 January 2009 Lattelecom announced a project aimed at ensuring a major rapid Internet infrastructure known as “Network of the Future” with the hooking up of the first test clients in apartment buildings in the Zolitūde neighbourhood of Rīga. As a result of this project, private clients in Latvia will have access to Europe’s fastest Internet services, with speeds of up to 500 Mb/s. In future, the plan is to increase the speed of Internet connections to as much as 10 Gb/s, thus ensuring all but unlimited opportunities to use the Internet.

Lattelecom’s optic connections will at first ensure clients with services at a speed of up to 100 Mb/s, which will make it possible to watch streaming television channels at a high level of quality. As the project is developed, the speed will increase to 500 Mb/s this year, and perhaps 10 Gb/s in the more distant future.

“Local residents have become more demanding vis-à-vis the speed and quality of their Internet connection. At home they want to use several computers that are connected to the Internet simultaneously, as well as to use several television sets that are hooked up to digital television services and require a rapid connection speed. We’re proud of the fact that technologies are developing in line with these increased demands and that Lattelecom can increasingly satisfy those needs,” says Lattelecom’s commercial director, Jānis Ligers.

By the end of January, Internet services at a speed of up to 100 Mb/s are to be installed at more than 30 apartment buildings in Zolitūde – the first neighbourhood in Rīga where the “Network to the Future” project is to be implemented. Afterward, Lattelecom plans to expand its optic access network to other Rīga neighbourhoods such as Ķengarags, Imanta, Plāvnieki, etc. In future, the network will also be offered to private clients in other major Latvian cities.

The rapid optic connection will allow users to make full use of Lattelecom services such as the Internet, phone calls and Lattelecom TV. The connection will also allow people to use services which Lattelecom is still developing, including HDTV (high definition television) services.

After the installation of the optic network Lattelecom clients will be able to arrange a time when the company can come and install rapid Internet services. Internet and Lattelecom TV users will be able to receive services on the basis of the optic cable infrastructure while paying no more for the services.
