OREANDA-NEWS. February 6, 2009. The construction of Baltic Nuclear Power Plant, which is supposed to guarantee the energy security of the Russian exclave in the Baltic region, will be started in Feb-Mar 2009, says Governor of Kaliningrad region Georgy Boos. But the construction site of the future plant has not been determined yet.

“Presently, geologists are completing prospecting activities and shortly we will decide where we will build the plant,” says Infrastructure Development Minister of Kaliningrad region Alexander Rolbinov.

There are five potential sites – all of them are situated in the seismically safe north-east of the region. The 1st unit of the plant is to be launched in 2014, the second one – in 2016. Their total capacity will be 2,400MW. Due to Baltic NPP Kaliningrad region is expected to start exporting electricity to its neighbors. Boos says that Lithuania, Poland and North-Eastern Germany are showing interest in this project. Baltic NPP may even join the so-called Baltic Energy Ring of the European Union.
