President of Turkmenistan Presents High State Award to Oleg Kononenko
OREANDA-NEWS. February 18, 2009. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Hero of the Russian Federation, a cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and Alexey Korostelev, Chief of the International Cooperation Directorate, Russian Federal Space Agency.
Thanking the Turkmen leader for the opportunity of a personal meeting Oleg Kononenko said that he had arrived in Turkmenistan where he was born and grew up to perform an honorable mission. The guest said that he had taken the cherished things – the national flag of Turkmenistan and the President`s colour, a photo of the Turkmen leader and a small Turkmen carpet with him to the outer space. Oleg Kononenko presented the things which had been on the orbit of the earth to Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and said that wherever he would be he always had the love to the native Turkmen land in his heart.
The Turkmen leader cordially congratulated Oleg Kononenko on the fulfillment of the cosmic mission and said that the whole world had watched this cosmic Odysseus admiring the cosmonauts` courage and professionalism. The President said that the Turkmen people had watched this expedition very attentively because Oleg Kononenko`s way to the stars started in the Turkmen land, in Turkmenabat town where he was born and grew up, practiced sport and started to work and where his mother lived.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that today when the cosmic experiment had been crowned with success there was every reason to say that Turkmenistan had joined the family of the states whose plenipotentiary representatives had been to the outer space and contributed to the study of the mysteries of the universe. It was an outstanding achievement that the people of Turkmenistan were sincerely proud of.
The Turkmen leader said that many talented Turkmen boys dreamt about exploring the cosmos and expressed belief that Olen Kononenko would share and supervise these children who would fly to the stars and bring fame to Turkmenistan as their famous compatriot had done.
In recognition of Oleg Kononenko`s services to the Turkmen state and people President of Turkmenistan presented the high government award President`s Star Order to the cosmonaut in presence of the high-ranking officials of the Mejlis and cabinet ministers and wished good health and new accomplishments in the noble work of cosmonaut.
Expressing profound gratitude for the award Oleg Kononenko assured the Turkmen leader that he would maintain close contacts with the Motherland and spare no effort to promote expanding Turkmen-Russian cooperation on exploration of the outer space.
During the meeting the President and his guests exchanged views on the key aspects of this cooperation with the substantial potential in the context of the priorities of the policy of the Turkmen state which relied on application of advanced technologies in all sectors of the domestic economy. In particular, the opportunities of launching jointly a communications satellite were considered.
The guests presented the specific proposals to the Turkmen leader. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that Turkmenistan intended maintaining business constructive collaboration to fulfill its plans of peaceful space exploration.
In conclusion the President invited Oleg Kononenko and Alexey Korostelev to take part in the Flag Day celebrations.
In his interview Oleg Kononenko noted that it was very important and exciting meeting. “It was the meeting with the President of my Motherland where I was born, that I love and always have in my heart. I am profoundly grateful to the Turkmen leader for the concern and care for my mother who lives in Turkmenabat now. Of course, I am happy and proud of high appreciation of my modest services distinguished with the high government award – President`s Star Order.”
“I have not been to the Motherland for a long time and I am greatly amazed with its achievements. I am very proud of my country which has achieved such an impressive progress and keeps advancing towards new heights. I am sure it will gain many victories and accomplishments on this way,” Oleg Kononenko said in conclusion.
