OREANDA-NEWS. On 05 March 2009 was announced, that in the wake of an analysis of increasing client demands, Latvia’s leading provider of electronic services, Lattelecom, had increased the speed of its international Internet connections by more than 40%, to 10 Gb/s. This will allow Latvia’s residents and businesses to access foreign Internet pages more quickly and to enjoy better opportunities to watch streaming video and download files. Lattelecom will continue to speed up its Internet services. People in the Rоga neighbourhood of Zolitыde already have a 100 Mb/s connection, and soon Lattelecom plans to open up the first direct optic Internet connection with Russia.

Until now, Lattelecom’s average international Internet speed has been around 7 Gb/s. As people increasingly seek information and download things from foreign sites, Lattelecom is prepared to increase the overall traffic speed in its network. Users won’t have to pay extra for this higher speed.

“Both foreign and local Internet sites are offering increasingly broader aspects of information extraction and entertainment. People increasingly watch videos on the Internet, and the Net is increasingly competing with television. That’s because on the Internet you can watch what you want when you want to. The result has been insufficient Internet speed, and that’s why Lattelecom is increasing it and will always continue to increase it. We want our clients to have convenient access to the global Web,” says Lattelecom’s commercial director, Jвnis Ligers.

At the beginning of 2009, Lattelecom launched an extensive project, “Future Network,” which is aimed at speeding up the Internet. The first private clients in the Zolitыde neighbourhood of Rоga were hooked up to a system offering speeds of 100 Mb/s. By year’s end, private clients in Latvia will have access to the fastest Internet services in Europe – up to 500 Mb/s. In future, the speed will be increased to 10 Gb/s, at which point opportunities related to Internet use will basically be unlimited.

Lattelecom is also developing its international Internet network. Soon there will be a direct optic connection to Russia. Lattelecom has nine optic links to neighbouring countries and to Sweden. The total length of these optic cables is nearly 5,000 km. In October 2008, Lattelecom switched on a new DWDM-based optic connection between Latvia and Lithuania. This means that international Lattelecom clients can increase data transmission capacity in the Lattelecom optic network. The new infrastructure supports transmission speed of up to 10 Gb/s, and in future that will increase to as much as 40 Gb/s.

Lattelecom is the leading provider of electronic communications services in Latvia, offering integrated electronic communications and IT services, as well as telecommunications and network design and installation services. Lattelecom also provides data transmission and IT infrastructure solutions, Internet and contact centre services, and outsourced business process services. The Lattelecom Group is made up of five companies – Lattelecom, Lattelecom BPO, Lattelecom Technology, Citrus Solutions, and the Baltic Computer Academy.
