OREANDA-NEWS. On 12 March 2009 was announced, that Moscow International Airport Domodedovo became the first airport in Russia approved for New Large Aircraft A-380 operations. The confirming executive order was issued by the Russian Federal Agency for Air Transport.

A-380 (ICAO category F aircraft) operations imply the compliance of airport airdrome facilities with certain standards. The compliance of the usable runway dimensions, taxiway and runway surface pavement strength with these standards allow Domodedovo airport to receive A-380 aircraft.

The modernization of the first landing area that includes Runway -1, was started in 2003 in the framework of the “Reconstruction of Runway -1, taxiways and aircraft parking spaces of Domodedovo Airport in compliance with the Federal Modernization of the RF Transport System Program (2002 - 2010) ” federal project.

This project became a major step in the development of Domodedovo airport. As a result of its implementation the configuration of Runway – 1 and taxiways allow A-380 take-off, landing and taxiing operations under own engine power, without using heavy haulers. The geometry and load bearing strength of the reconstructed elements surface complies with RF regulatory documentation, ICAO standards and recommendations on this exact aircraft type. The Runway is technically equipped to receive aircrafts under any weather conditions.

Domodedovo now offers partner airlines the opportunity to operate direct and transit flights on the new superjumbo A-380.
