OREANDA-NEWS. March 18, 2009. In the course of a working visit to Tokyo, Japan, the Minister of Fuel and Energy of Ukraine Yurii Prodan signed two memorandums on mutual understanding between the Ministry of Fuel and Energy and two Japanese companies, Sumitomo Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation.

Particularly, with the view of significant improvement of energy effectiveness and reliability of Ukrainian heat-and-power engineering, desire to cut harmful emissions including greenhouse gases in compliance with Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change and realization of a series of demonstration projects a Memorandum on mutual understanding in heat-and-power engineering area between the Ministry of Fuel and Energy and Sumitomo Corporation was signed on March 9, 2009.

Under the inked instrument the parties have agreed to cooperate on mutually beneficial basis in the direction of information exchange concerning bilateral cooperation, applying of mechanisms of Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change and introduction in Ukraine of modern blocks with capacity of 600 MWT on supercritical parameters on Ukrainian thermoelectric power stations. Besides, both Japanese and Ukrainian sides expressed their wish to organize a joint production of boiler and turbine equipment for 600 MWT blocks.

The signed memorandum contains that the parties shall pay efforts to search effective and mutually beneficial variants of financing the projects realized in the framework of the Memorandum, including funds in the framework of Japan Official Development Assistance Program. The abovementioned list of cooperation directions is not complete and can be added on mutual consent of the two parties in the future.

The Memorandum was concluded for one year and its validity shall be prolonged every following year automatically unless any of the parties expresses a wish to terminate this document.

In addition, with an intention to realize opportunities in the area of modernization of gas transport system projects on March 10, 2009 in Tokyo a Memorandum on mutual understanding on the joint research with an aim to introduce energy-saving technologies in gas transport system between the Ministry of Fuel and Energy and Mitsubishi Corporation was signed.

In particular, the Ministry of Fuel and Energy and Mitsubishi Corporation intend to hold joint research and find possibilities for cooperation with regards to the projects of modernization of compressor stations of GTS (compressors and accessories to them on electric motors) and a respective project of their joint introduction. Grounded on the results of holding an Inspection Program it is planned to prepare a general report with recommendations for approval a decision concerning possible cooperation of the Parties in the area of realization of concrete projects on introduction of certain technologies in the GTS.
