OREANDA-NEWS. Apr 1 2009 at 09:32 PM the automatic protection system of Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant stopped the plant’s 3rd unit. The causes of the incident are being investigated.

The 1st and 2nd units are operating safely at 1,035MW and 1,050MW, respectively.

The radiation background at Kalinin NPP and in its 30-km monitoring zone is 5–13 microR/h, which is within norm.

Kalinin NPP is situated in the north of Tver region: 125 km away from Tver, 330 km from Moscow, 400 km from St.Petersburg, on the southern shore of Lake Udomlia. The total area of the plant is 287.37 h. The plant has three WWER-1000 reactors (1000 MW each). Kalinin NPP is part of the United Energy System of Central Russia. Its electricity is transmitted to eight regions via two 330KV and four 750KV lines. The 4th unit is under construction and is to be launched in 2011.
