OREANDA-NEWS. On 28 April 2009 was announced, that 50 employees of Oranta’s head office and Kyiv city directorate together with the representatives of the UN in Ukraine and the volunteers of other UN Global Compact member companies participated in the environmental activity - large-scale cleaning event- Zelena (Green) Toloka, organized in partnership with Krayina Mriy (Country of Dreams) Ethnical Festival.

In course of the event many people have revealed their environmental responsibility and united their efforts in voluntary cleaning of Kiev’s green zone and public recreational area - Trukhaniv Island between the Moscow and the Railway bridges of Kiev. This was the third collective ecological event organized in the framework of the national “Go Green!” campaign initiated by the UN Office in Ukraine and the Global Compact network.

Last year over one hundred participants representing 20 socially-responsible companies of Ukraine participated in this activity and set a record of 5 tons of collected garbage. This year the event attracted more than 350 participants who collectively broke last year’s record by collecting over 8 tons of plastic, glass and other trash.

“This year our activity has a very good name – Toloka, because traditionally it was organized for tasks requiring immediate effort. Taking care of the environment today is one of the most urgent tasks in which all the stakeholders have a role to play including Government, business, civil society, and every one of us”, said Ms. Ilaria Carnevali, a.i. United Nations Development Programme Officer.

The program of the event also featured the performance of the ethnic music group Gulyay Gorod. The show aroused a lot of positive emotions and rejuvenated the tired volunteers after the cleaning activities.

It has become a good tradition in the framework of the Go Green campaign to conduct joint ecological activities, uniting efforts of the GC members, their families and friends for cleaning green zones of Kiev. Oranta joined the Global Compact initiative in December, 2008 by becoming a signatory of the Compact thus publicly declaring its commitment to the principles of socially-responsible business.
