OREANDA-NEWS. May 5, 2009. Victory Day is the most emotional date in our country. Moscow metro took part in World War II providing shelter for the citizens during air raids. Many metro workers enrolled in the Red Army, others joined armed citizens. The rest of the workers got an extra task of organizing shelter for the inhabitants of Moscow and setting up Red Army staff headquarters at metro stations. Besides, metro workers used their own resources to construct an armoured train, which was later used at the battle of Kursk.

Traditionally, metro workers honour the veterans of World War II before Victory Day. They meet at Severnoe depot at the obelisk that was erected to honour Russian soldiers. This year is no exception – metro authorities and workers will come to lay flowers at the obelisk on May 8, 2009. War veterans will be present at the ceremony too.
