OREANDA-NEWS. May 13, 2009. In the second quarter of this year the Moscow and Saint-Petersburg Mints – Branches of Goznak have started striking fractional coins with the face-value of 1, 2 and 5 rubles of steel with nickel electroplating under the order of the Bank of Russia.

The coins with these face-values have previously been made of copper-nickel alloy (1 and 2 rubles) and copper covered with copper-nickel alloy (5 rubles).
The graphic design and dimensions of coins of the new sort are not changed.
In order to shift to the production of the new sort of coins the Mints were not retrofitted with new equipment but used the technological reserves of the already existing equipment.
