OREANDA-NEWS. May 19, 2009. Energoatom Concenr and Afrikantov OKBM have presented a joint report on development of fast breeder reactors at international congress in Tokyo.

International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2009) took place in Tokyo May 11–14. The congress was organized by Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, jointly with American and European nuclear societies.

The event coincided with the visit of Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin to Japan.

The key topics of the congress were national development strategies and new reactors and fuel cycles, particularly, fast breeder reactors, which are considered as the future of nuclear power engineering and a guarantor of global sustainable development.

Russia was represented by Energoatom Concern OJSC and Afrikantov OKBM, which presented a joint report on fast breeder reactors, particularly, the 29-year successful performance of BN-600 reactor of Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant and the construction of its improved version at the same plant, BN-800, the world’s biggest fast breeder reactor. The report has confirmed the leading role of our country in the field of innovative nuclear reactor technologies.

The congress has shown that Japan, India, South Korea and many EU members states are actively working on innovative reactors and fuel cycles with a view to ensure energy security of the international community, to solve the problem of nuclear waste, to improve the safety of nuclear reactors and to guarantee further nuclear nonproliferation. The participation of representatives of Atomenergoprom OJSC has proved that Russia is an active participant in this work.
