OREANDA-NEWS. May 18, 2009. The minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania Eligijus Masiulis met the minister of Transport of Russia Igor Levitin, where cargo transportation by railways tariffs, cooperation in road transport field, and shipping in the Curonian Lagoon and communications development matters, reported the press-centre of Klaipeda port.
 
The ministers paid a lot of attention to the cooperation in railway field as both countries are interested to develop and improve cargo transportation conditions in East-West direction. Kaliningrad region is of special importance as most of Russian cargo to this region pass via the territory of Lithuania.
 
Last year AB „Lietuvos gelezinkeliai“ transported 16,5 mil tons of cargo to Kaliningrad region, but the record quantity – 17,6 mil tons – was reached in 2007. Recently the cargo flows to Kaliningrad region are significantly decreasing: during January-March 2009 the volumes of cargo decreased by 48,7 percent.
 
The ministers of Transport of Russia and Lithuania took part at the international  „International Baltic Marine Innovations Forum“, where the regional and international transport interfaces of the Baltic countries were discussed, trade tendencies and the initiatives to develop transport junctions of the Baltic Sea region.
