OREANDA-NEWS. July 23, 2009. The Security Council of Russia will consider the project to create super-computers at one of the next meetings, President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev said in Sarov on July 22 2009.

“Given the global ban on nuclear tests, the only way for us to check up the efficiency of the nuclear shield is computer modeling. That’s why the most powerful super-computers will be stationed at federal nuclear centers,” Medvedev said during a meeting of the Committee on Modernization and Technological Development of Economy.

“Today, we will discuss this project and will consider it at one of the next meetings of the Security Council.”

The President said that by 2011 VNIIEF is planning to develop a computer that can carry out one quadrillion operations at one and the same time.

The Government is going to spend quite big money on this project – over 2.5bln RUR. In the future this direction will be developed.

Medvedev pointed out the exclusive importance of such computers.

“Without them we will not be able to use so powerful computing infrastructure,” he said.

“We have quite good conditions here despite the collapse of the 1990s. In some aspects we are even better than our rivals,” Medvedev said.

“This project requires well-trained specialists. For this purpose, we must create training centers at specialized educational and research organizations,” Medvedev said.
