OREANDA-NEWS. On July 20-21, 2009 The international round table on “The political and economic reforms in Uzbekistan” was held in Tashkent, reported the Official website gov.uz.

It was organized by the Institute for the Study of Civil Society and Ministry of Economy of Uzbekistan jointly with the Office of the OSCE Project Coordinator in the country, the National Democratic Institute (USA) and the European Institute of International Relations.

The experts from the UK, Germany, the United States, Japan, Netherlands, India, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Iran, China, Kuwait, Pakistan and Central Asian countries participated in the forum.

They discussed the political and economic reforms in Uzbekistan, the main directions of modernization and democratic renewal of society, the implementation of the Anti-crisis program for 2009-2012 and other issues.

In their reports, the participants emphasized that Uzbekistan’s own model of socioeconomic development ensured a steady and progressive development of the country.

This model of stage-by-stage reform and modernization of the country, based on five key principles, has proved its importance and viability. The unique experience of Uzbekistan in carrying out reforms in the social and political sphere has been attracting growing attention from international expert and policy circles.

The dynamic and steady economic growth in Uzbekistan, it was noted at the forum, confirms the viability and effectiveness of the chosen model of development.

The systemic measures taken by the leadership of Uzbekistan have allowed the country to overcome the consequences of the global economic crisis, ensure the dynamic and balanced growth of the real sector, sustainable socioeconomic development and improved living standards.

The radical changes in the judicial system have served to protection of human rights and freedoms, it was mentioned at the forum. During the years of independence, Uzbekistan has been successfully solved the task of forming a coherent system of independent judiciary.

Measures have been taken to liberalize the system of criminal penalties and the activity of the law enforcement bodies. Uzbekistan abolished the death penalty, and is actively implementing the institute of habeas corpus.

The reforms in this area are aimed at ensuring the primacy of the rights, freedoms and lawful interests of citizens and their protection.
