OREANDA-NEWS. On 11 August 2009 was announced, that in the first half of 2009 Turkmenistan produced more than 7.950 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, up 4.3% year-on-year. In the reported period, Turkmenistan exported 1.546 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is 16% more than in the first quarter of 2008.

Turkmenistan exports electricity to Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey and Tajikistan. This year it is planned to export 2.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, the corporation said.

A number of projects for construction of new power plants and transmission lines are currently under way in Turkmenistan with the support of the state. It is expected that by 2020 electricity production in Turkmenistan will increase to 26.38 billion kilowatt-hours, while its exports to neighboring countries, both via existing and new routes, will increase to 6 billion kilowatt-hours per year.
