OREANDA-NEWS. On 24 August 2009 OMZ (Uralmash-Izhora Group) (RTS: OMZZ; LSE: OMZD; OTC: UHMVY), a leading heavy machinery company with assets located in Russia and the Czech Republic, announced that its Izhorskiye Zavody unit has shipped a transportation locking system for the second power unit of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), India.

Shipping the lock is itself a unique operation because of the unit’s sheer size: the unit is 14 meters long; its diameter is 9 meters and its weight is 280 tons. The lock was disassembled into a number of sections and transported by road by special carriers. The road route crossed an electric railway. Train traffic was suspended for two hours, the rail bed was covered with concrete slabs, and special rail cars raised overhead power lines. The lock was successfully delivered to a port in Izhora River estuary, from where it will be delivered to the St. Petersburg sea port by barge for onward shipping to the customer in India.
