OREANDA-NEWS. August 27, 2009. Nizhniy Novgorod Nuclear Power Plant will annually pay 1bln-2bln RUR in taxes, Deputy Minister of Economy of Nizhniy Novgorod region Nikolay Petrovsky said at an enlarged meeting of the Council of the Public Chamber of Nizhniy Novgorod region.

The plant will pay profit, property, land and transport taxes to the budgets of Nizhniy Novgorod region and Navashino district.

“The plant will serve for 60 years, which means that for as many as 60 years the region will stably get big additional revenues,” Petrovsky said.

The Volga Federal Okrug development strategy regards the construction of Nizhniy Novgorod NPP as one of the biggest infrastructural and socially significant projects.

This project is vital for Navashino district and the south of Nizhniy Novgorod region.

“Since the beginning of this year the unemployment rate in Navashino and neighboring districts has redoubled. I think that the Nizhniy Novgorod NPP project will help us to solve this problem,” Petrovsky said.

Presently, the average salary of nuclear workers is 39,000 RUR.

In Dec 2008 Governor of Nizhniy Novgorod region Valery Shantsev and Director General of Energoatom Concern Sergey Obozov signed a declaration of intention to finance the construction of a nuclear power plant in Nizhniy Novgorod region. The declaration has been approved by the Government of Nizhniy Novgorod region.

The estimated cost of the project is 268.7bln RUR. The plant will have four 1,150MW reactors. The 1st unit is supposed to be launched in 2016, the 2nd unit — in 2018, the 3rd unit — in 2019, the 4th unit — in 2020.

There are two potential sites for the future nuclear power plants: Monakovo and Uren. Nizhniy Novgorod Atomenergoproekt says that the construction of the plant at Monakovo will cost 15% less than at Uren.

Nizhniy Novgorod NPP is supposed to cover the shortage of energy in Nizhniy Novgorod region. Experts say that by 2020 the region will consume 6.2–6.8GW with the shortage amounting to 4.2GW.

The project will be carried out with the maximum use of the industrial, construction and personnel capacities of the region. Feb 14 2008 Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation named Nizhniy Novgorod Atomenergoproekt as the general designer of the project.

During the peak period the project will involve as many as 8,000 people with almost 2,200 people to be employed as operators – mostly graduates of higher professional schools of Russia and Nizhniy Novgorod region and professional development centers of Energoatom Concern.
