OREANDA-NEWS. On August 28, 2009 TNK-BP announced that the company has for the first time reported official data on greenhouse gas emissions in 2005—2008, reported the press-centre of TNK-BP.

In 2008, greenhouse gas emissions by the TNK-BP group of companies amounted to 22 million tons of the carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent which is 18% lower as compared to 2007. The released data illustrates a consisitent trend to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the company subisidiaries and can be viewed at the page Estimation of greenhouse gases emissionst.

“Climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions is a global challenge which requires a consolidated effort of state institutions and private businesses,” said Tim Summers, Chief Operating Officer of TNK-BP. “TNK-BP is stepping up its contribution to combating climate change through active work to utilize associated petroleum gas and enhanced energy efficiency in every aspect of our operations.”

In 2009, TNK-BP plans to bring an effective utilization rate of associated petroleum gas (APG) to 84%. In the next three years the company will invest about US700 million in APG utilization projects and achieve a 95% utilization rate in 2012.

“Comparative analysis of greenhouse gas emissions per ton of oil produced or refined by international major companies shows that TNK-BP’s perfomance in that respect is internationally competitive,” said Evgeny Bulgakov, Vice President for Health, Safety and Environment of TNK-BP. “TNK-BP is the first major Russian company to disclose greenhouse emission data in compliance with international reporting requirements. This underlines our long-held strategic intent to set new environmental benchmarks in the Russian oil industry.”

Notes for editors
The methods for calculating TNK-BP’s greenhouse gas emissions were developed on the basis of recommendations made by IPIECA (The International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association) and API (The American Petroleum Instritute) and tested in collaboration with experts from BP. The results are based on emissions of the main greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (СН4) and nitrous oxide (N2O).

In 2008, TNK-BP produced 9.7 billion cubic metres of associated petroleum gas (APG), which is 14.7% more than in 2007. In 2009, the company expects to produce about 12 billion cubic metres of APG. The average APG utilization rated amounted to 80% in 2008 as compared to 68% in the previous year.

TNK-BP is Russia’s third largest oil company, 50% owned by BP and 50% owned by AAR (Alfa Group Consortium, Access Industries, Renova Group of Companies). TNK-BP also owns close to 50% of another Russian oil and gas company, Slavneft. TNK-BP accounts for approximately 16% of Russia’s production (including its share of Slavneft). SEC proved reserves (life of field basis) were 8.112 billion boe as of December 31, 2008. The company’s upstream operations are located in West and East Siberia and the Volga-Urals region. TNK-BP owns and operates five refineries in Russia and Ukraine, and retails through a network of 1,400 service stations working under the BP and TNK brands.
