OREANDA-NEWS. September 03, 2009. There were 1,358.1 million economically active residents (employed people and the jobless) in Moldova in the second quarter of 2009, down by 2.9 per cent against the same period last year, according to data by the National Statistics Bureau (BNS).

The head of the BNS's labour market and demography department, Elena Vitcarau, has said that, in the second quarter of 2009, the number of employed people stood at 1,275.3 million.

As many as 32.2 per cent of them worked in the farming sector, 12 per cent in industry and 5.7 per cent in construction sector.

At the same time, about 50 per cent of all the employees worked in the services sector, and their share increased by 3.4 per cent against the second quarter of 2008. Not only the share, but also the absolute number of people employed in the services sector increased by 5,100.

Elena Vitcarau specified that the number of the jobless, estimated according to the methodology of the International Labour Office, was of 82,800 people. Unemployment mainly affected men with 60.9 per cent and people from urban areas with 57.9 per cent.
