OREANDA-NEWS. September 29, 2009. The Climate Action Certificate confirms the Company’s commitment to environmental protection in accordance with the international standards.

Metinvest is the first and the only Ukrainian company that has full membership status with the World Steel Association (WSA). Membership at this international organization presumes active environmental efforts of major metallurgical companies of the whole world, who are responsible for nature conservation and improvement of climate on the Earth.

The World Steel Association initiated the Climate Action research program in 2008. It is expected that this research will help assessing the trend of metallurgical industry’s impact on environment till 2050. This program facilitates the steel making companies in prioritizing their efforts and technologies aimed at reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The largest metallurgical companies, including POSCO, ArcelorMittal, China Steel Corporation, Corus, Voestalpine, and etc., have already joined the program.

Metinvest is implementing 10 different projects within the framework of its environmental projects based on the Kyoto Protocol mechanisms, such as coal mine methane utilization project, heat and electric power generation using flare gases, and a number of other energy efficient activities.

“We recognize that our Ukrainian enterprises have development potential in terms of environmental impact reduction, - Igor Syry stated – Climate ActionCertificate is one of convincing evidences that our intentions are serious and our strategy in terms of environmental protection efforts remains unchanged”.
