OREANDA-NEWS. September 30, 2009. A new batch of large-size equipment was installed at the BN-800 unit of Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant in Sept 2009.

In the machine hall the personnel have installed part of the condenser of the future steam turbine: 3 condensate collectors each weighing 64 tons. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Leningrad Metal Factory (the manufacturer of turbines for BN-800).

In the steam generator compartment of the main building they placed 3 sodium tanks for the secondary circuit each weighing 42 tons.

The units were carried and mounted by a 600 ton mobile crane.

The construction site covers a total area of 60 h. The work is being done according to the schedule. 2,500 constructors and installers representing almost 30 Ural companies are taking part in the construction.

Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant is Russia’s only nuclear power plant having different types of reactors: the 1st unit with AMB-100 thermal reactor was launched in Apr 1964. For the moment, the 1st and 2nd units are being decommissioned.

Since Apr 1980 Beloyarsk NPP has operated the world’s only commercial fast-breeder reactor – BN-600 (600MW). The BN-800 reactor (800MW) is under construction and is supposed to be launched in 2012.

Fast-breeder reactors are supposed to enlarge the fuel resources of Russia’s nuclear industry by over 50 times, to minimize the production of radioactive waste and to use the spent nuclear fuel produced by other NPPs due to closed fuel cycle technology.
