OREANDA-NEWS. October 2, 2009. TVEL OJSC and Exelon (US) are discussing the prospects of cooperation on nuclear fuel, a source from the nuclear industry told journalists on Thursday.

Exelon wants to cooperate with TVEL on TVS-Kvadrat technology and is ready to provide the Russian company with all technical data on its reactors.

Meanwhile, TVEL has confirmed its plans to complete the qualification of TVS-Kvadrat, a fuel assembly designed for western reactors, and to load it into at least one reactor in Europe and the United States by 2015.

TVEL OJSC (100% subsidiary of Atomenergoprom OJSC) is one of the world’s biggest producers and suppliers of nuclear fuel for commercial and research reactors in Russia and abroad.

The basic reactor technologies used in the field of nuclear power engineering for the moment is pressurized water reactors (WWER (VVER) in Russia and PWR and BWR in the West). 86% of all reactors are based on this technology. The reactors of Russian design use hexagonal fuel assemblies while PWRs – square assemblies.
