OREANDA-NEWS. October 13, 2009. KAZAKHMYS PLC, common shares of which are listed on Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE), provided KASE with a press release, reported the press-centre of KASE:

The largest Kazakhstan energy producer, Kazakhmys is continuing to implement its investment program to change energy equipment. Kazakhmys launched a new turbo generator on the Karaganda GRES-2 providing power to local population and units of the Group.

The new high pressure USD23 m turbo generator will increase capacity of the station from 608MBt to 663MBt and improve reliability of power supply. The generator has an air cooling system, which replaced a hydrogen system improving operational safety of GRES-2.

"The generator was purchased under the investment program for modernization of enterprises in Kazakhstan. We need reliable and strong energy sector to improve life quality and aid to economical growth of the country. This requires significant investment in new assets and support of current service. We are intending to invest in the energy, which is useful for Kazakhmys and for the  whole state" - Chairman of Kazakhmys Eduard Ogay said.

Karaganda GRES-2 is located three kilometers from Topar settlement in Karaganda oblast. The power station had been built since April 1954. In June 1962 the first generator was launched. The power station is a part of Unified Energy System of Kazakhstan.

GRES-2 is the largest power generator of Kazakhmys. GRES-2 provides power to the Group in Balkhash, Zhezkazgan and Karaganda. Power surplus is sold on the Kazakhstan power market.

The power station employs seven turbines and sixteen boilers.
