OREANDA-NEWS. December 22, 2009. Volokolamsky Tunnel on Leningradsky Highway was opened to traffic from the centre of Moscow to its region.

According to a source from City Hall, the tunnel is expected to ease traffic on Leningradskoe Highway.

The road interchange containing Volokolamsky Tunnel located at the junction of Leningradsky Avenue and Volokolamskoe Highway, near Sokol Station of the Moscow Metro, is undergoing reconstruction within the Bolshaya Leningradka project aimed at adapting Leningradsky Avenue and Leningradskoe Highway for traffic free of light signals.

“Traffic from the centre [of Moscow] to the region will flow on three lanes, as well as backwards. The length of the tunnel is roughly 1,730 kilometres, including a 1,170-kilometre covered section. Its ultimate depth is 20 metres,” the official added.

It is worth reminding that Volokolamsky Tunnel was opened to traffic from the Moscow region to the centre of the Russian capital in August 2009.
