OREANDA-NEWS. December 30, 2009. MegaFon’s Siberia Branch in Novosibirsk launched into service the biggest and the most productive data centre in three federal districts: Ural, Siberia and Far East. Its construction took less than 18 months; this site will be providing for technological development of the branch throughout Siberia till 2014 and will make it possible to offer new high-quality services to subscribers.

Capacity of the new MegaFon data centre is 1.6 MW and the total space is about 2,000 sq. m. The new site is at least twice as big as any similar sites in Siberia known to public.

MegaFon’s data-centre  has two major computer rooms — for switching telecommunication equipment and computing equipment. In addition to the computer rooms, there are many premises for infrastructure facilities: uninterrupted power supply (UPS), automated gas fire-fighting systems, coolant treatment system (ventilation, pump), power supply, warehousing etc. The site will have sufficient capacity for development of the network until 2014. And if upgraded, the capacity of computing equipment in the data centre (billing and other technological systems, data storage network SAN, data transfer network, office information systems etc.) will provide for another 7-10 year period.

It is planned to organize a node of IP-MPLS Trunkline Multiservice Network with DWDM equipment in the future. Several fiber-optical access lines are connected to the data centre. In general the put-through capacity of the backhaul network for this site may be arranged up to 400 Gbps.

“We are growing dynamically and have to meet high quality standards of the world-class operator. Opening of such a powerful data centre is the basis for the further development of the company and an actual example of why and where we are investing money received from our core business. The data centre will be responsible for uninterrupted operation of thousands of 2G and 3G base stations throughout Siberia, and it will be enough for us to have this data centre alone till 2014 for appropriate development of the company taking into consideration the planned pace of GSM and 3G networks development. Total investments in the data centre construction amounted to MRUR 800”, Alexey Tyutin, Director of MegaFon Siberia Branch commented.

Oleg Fyodorov, First Deputy Director of MegaFon Siberia Branch added, “The company’s data centre was completed in record-breaking time if compared with any construction of such type. It is really a unique case of IT-area development behind the Ural Mountains, because the investments are comparable to construction of a large manufacturing enterprise. The land plot under the site is owned by us, which will reduce our OPEX significantly and mitigate possible rent-related risks”.
