OREANDA-NEWS. December 31, 2009. The runway # 1 came into operation. During the reconstruction the concrete pavement both the runway and taxiways have been fully replaced; lighting facilities and electrical generating systems have also been reconstructed. A new birdscarer system and ice formation detection system (what is very important in wintertime) have been installed. The dimensions of the runway after the reconstruction remained the same: 3760x60 metres; the square is 226 800 sq.m.

The fourth taxiway for the rapid turnoff of aircrafts has been built during the reconstruction. This will help to promote airport handling capacity.

The runway # 1 is certificated by 1st and 2nd ICAO categories that allows to handle take-offs and landings under adverse weather conditions, it also has permits for almost all the aircraft types.

The general designer of the 1st runway reconstruction is FSUE PI and research institute “Lenaeroproekt”, the general contractor is CJSC “Engineering corporation “Transstroi”. The building owner is the St-Petersburg Construction Committee. The reconstruction is valued at 3 715 milliard roubles.

The 1st runway was built in 1980 and is one of the two runways at Pulkovo Airport. Earlier in 2006 the 2nd runway was under the reconstruction. It is certificated for handling any aircraft types under any weather conditions.

After having put into operation the 1st runway the airport has the complex of parallel independent runways that is, according to the world practice, one of the optimum for the handling of maximum aircraft quantity.
