OREANDA-NEWS. March 26, 2010. Russian Railways is choosing a name for the suburban Desiro trains manufactured by Siemens AG that will be serving passengers during the XXII Winter Olympic Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games to be held in Sochi in 2014.

Suburban modular trains built on the Desiro platform will carry participants, spectators and guests of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games from the airport and train station to the sport venues, and also on the Tuapse – Adler line.

Suggestions of names for the trains can be submitted within two weeks on the official Russian Railways site. After all suggestions have been submitted, the company will organize a vote to decide the winning name.

At the end of December 2009, Russian Railways signed a contract with Siemens AG for the delivery of 54 suburban trains.

For the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Siemens will provide Russian Railways with 54 Desiro suburban trains at a total cost of 580 million euros.

The first 38 trains will be produced at the Siemens assembly plant in Krefeld, Germany. The other 16 trains will be partially manufactured in Russia.

The Desiro modular trains have a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The launch of the Desiro service is scheduled for autumn 2013.
