OREANDA-NEWS. April 15, 2010. Dmitry Medvedev and President of Argentina Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner discussed projects in the most promising areas of cooperation between the two countries: Russian participation in building a nuclear power plant in Argentina, joint use of Russia’s GLONASS satellite navigation system, and Russia’s continued supply of icebreakers and helicopters for Argentine Antarctic expeditions. The two leaders also discussed diversifying bilateral trade.

Other subjects on the agenda included overcoming the global financial crisis’ impact, and Latin America’s political and economic integration. In particular, the talks looked at expanding Russia’s cooperation with the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), the Rio Group, and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

Cultural and humanitarian ties were also a particular focus of attention given that Argentina is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its statehood this year, and the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with Russia.

The two presidents concluded their talks by adopting a joint declaration on cooperation based on mutual commitment to the principles of international law and the United Nations’ central role in world affairs.

The two leaders also oversaw the signing of a number of bilateral agreements, including Memorandum of understanding between Russian Federal Space Agency and National Space Commission of Argentina on cooperation in utilization and development of Global Navigation System GLONASS.

Following their talks, Mr Medvedev and Ms Fernandez de Kirchner made press statements and answered journalists’ questions.
