OREANDA-NEWS. April 20, 2010. In the period from January to March this year, Ukraine has increased electricity exports by 34% (or by 304.8 m kWh) y-o-y to 1.202 TWh.

In the above time, Ukraine, in particular, has increased electricity exports to Hungary by 59.7% to 226.5m kWh, cut exports to Slovakia 3.1 times to 236.1 m kWh, and increased to Rumania 2.8 times to 61.6m kWh.

From January to March this year, Ukrinterenergo has supplied 676 m kWh of electricity to Belarus while in the first quarter of 2009 there were no supplies to that country.

Poland has not imported Ukrainian electricity from January to March.

From March 1 this year, Ukraine suspended commercial electricity supplies from Burshtynskaya TPP to Slovakia, Hungary and Romania due to the shortage of gaseous coals in the domestic market.

It should be noted that since 2010, Ukraine has switched to a new model of electricity export supplies where market players buy access to cross-border electricity transmission lines from the mains operator, NEC Ukrenergo, at auctions. Upon the results of the annual auction (for entire 2010) an access to 100 MW from the so called Burshtyn energy island, which exports electricity to Eastern European countries, has been purchased by Zakhidenergo OJSC. 150 MW has been acquired by the privately run Vostokenergo LLC (DTEK). 25 MW of non-guaranteed supplies has been bought by the state run company Ukrinterenergo. Besides, in December and January, Ukrenergo held monthly auctions for supplies in January and February, where Vostokenergo and Ukrinterenergo bought about 250 MW of the transmission capacity of the island.

Reference.
In 2009, Ukraine reduced electricity supplies by 49.2%, or 3.867 TWh, to 4 TWh compared with 2008. Last year, Ukraine exported electricity to Slovakia, Hungary, Belarus, Poland, and Rumania. Exports were conducted by Ukrinterenergo, which purchased electricity on the Wholesale Electricity Market at a tariff set by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission.

In 2008, Ukraine cut electricity exports by 14.5% y-o-y to 7.868 TWh. In terms of cost, Ukrainian electricity exports increased in 2008 by 26.8%, or USD 101.6m, to make USD 480.4m.
