Ukraine to Resume Electricity from Burshtyn Energy Island Export
OREANDA-NEWS. April 28, 2010. The export of electricity from so called Burshtyn Energy Island (Burshtyn TPP OJSC Zahidenergo) which is synchronized with European energy system will be resumed starting the 1st of July – said the president of NJSC Energy Company of Ukraine Petr Omelyanovsky referring to the 2010 budgeted balance sheet of energy, fuel and expenses of TPS group of companies.
“The starting date is 1st of July according to the budgeted balance sheet ”, he said.
P. Omelyanovsky reminded that the export had been cancelled due to critically low stocks of gaseous coal at the Burshtyn station and added that given the coal deficit the possible transfer to gas combustion would be economically inexpedient.
“We have stopped it because the coal stocks at Burshtyn TPS in March and April were lower than minimum. We could not continue the export as well as we could not replace coal with gas as that would have brought us to enormous losses ”, said P. Omelyanovsky.
According to UNIAN, Ukraine stopped commercial supply of electricity from Burshtyn TPS to Slovakia, Hungary and Romania since the 1st of March 2010 because of the internal deficit of gaseous coal.
To recap, since 2010 Ukraine has switched to a new model of energy export. According to this model the transmission system operator NEC Ukrenergo auctions the access to cross-border transmission lines by which export is carried out. By the results of annual auction (for the year 2010) the access to the 100 MW capacity of so called Burshtyn Energy Island (the starting point of energy export to Eastern Europe) was purchased by the public company OJSC Zahidenergo. Another 150 MW were purchased by the private company LLC Vostokenergo (DTEK). 25 mW of unsecured supplies were bought by the public company Ukrinterenergo. Ukrenergo also carried monthly auctions selling January-February supply period at which Vostokenergo and Ukrinterenergo purchased about 250 MW of island’s capacity.
UNIAN Note. In January to March 2010 Ukraine increased the energy export by 34 % (304.8 mln kWh) to 1.202 bln kWh compared to the same period in 2009. In 2009 Ukraine decreased the energy export by 49.2 % or 3.867 bln kWh to 4 bln kWh compared to 2008. Last year Ukraine exported energy to Slovakia, Hungary, Belarus, Poland and Romania. The export was carried out by the State Foreign Trade Company Ukrinterenergo which bought the energy on the wholesale energy market according to the tariff set by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission of Ukraine.
